We live in a global, interconnected world where diversity is a key distinguishing feature of modern society. While businesses are making progress in the area of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEI&B), there is still a long way to go. One of the challenges is that it\u2019s not always clear to organizations how diversity in the workplace impacts not only morale, but performance and output, too. Another hurdle that often arises is translating awareness and learning into impactful actions and valuable outcomes. Diversity refers to the ways in which we differ. <\/span>WeWork<\/span><\/a> defines a diverse workplace as one \u2018made up of people from a wide variety of backgrounds at every level of the business, from entry-level roles all the way up to management\u2019. It\u2019s important to note that diversity describes a characteristic of groups, not people. Moreover, employees and customers have begun to take a stand and demand better, and more. These ongoing changes have led decision-makers in organizations to become increasingly aware of how diverse groups experience life and work, and this diversity in experience must be considered.<\/span><\/p>

Oakville Community Foundation<\/a> and Enable recently partnered to create an authentic and engaging video-based course on\u00a0Reconciliation, Equity, and Anti-racism. <\/i><\/a>The Foundation recognized that some organizations may be struggling to to find the resources they need to implement training. Declarations about commitment to DEI&B that aren\u2019t followed up with a real effort to make an organizational culture change can do more harm than good. According to a recent <\/span>article<\/span> <\/a>from Talent Canada, only 40% of Canadian companies report having a DEI policy. Without a policy, a real cultural change can\u2019t be made. Real and sustainable behavior change begins with learning new or unfamiliar concepts. But that\u2019s not where it ends. Employees and leaders should walk away from DEI&B training with an action plan. The path forward should include DEI&B goals for the company and should include specific, measurable outcomes (remember SMART goals?).<\/span><\/p>

A great way to achieve this is to include setting DEI&B goals as an activity in the training workshop.
